Pediatric Urology

deals with urological disease of kidneys, bladder and genitalia in children and adolescent. Some of the diseases need urgent therapy after birth other cases can be controlled.

It is a very specialised field

It is a very specialised field and needs highly skilled team of urologist and pediatrist to decide when surgery is indicated and when it can be avoided

HYDRONEPHROSIS

Hydronephrosis can be due to PUJ obstruction, Vesico ureteric reflux, posterior urethral valves etc. prompt treatment after birth will help in preventing recurrent urine infections and loss of kidney function.

POSTERIOR URETHRAL VALVES (PUV)

Often suspected antenatally and confirmed by a test called MCU/ VCUG after birth. Current treatment involves endoscopic correction of valves immediately after birth. Regular follow up is essential to prevent renal failure

PUJ OBSTRUCTION:

Majority are detected these days antenatally and do not need surgical correction. However a small proportion of them are severe obstrucion that can result in loss of kidney function over a period of time. It is essential to identify these by proper evaluation with DTPA/ MAG3 scan and ultrasound. Pyeloplasty is advised in such a situation.

URINE INFECTION; VESICO URETERIC REFLUX (VUR):

Recurrent UTI in children may be due to VUR. Often it resolves spontaneously. Recurrent UTI despite medical treament warrants intervention. Endoscopic STING procedure, or open Ureteric Reimplantation is

HYPOSPADIAS:

In this condition, boys pass urine from under surface of penis. Correction at the age of 1 makes them pass urine like other children and prevents future problems like infertility.

ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY:

Endoscopic treatment is available for conditions like Posterior urethral valves, urinary stones, ureterocele, vesico ureteric reflux and many similar problems that can occur in children.

PERCUTANEOUS SURGERY:

Minaturising instuments revolutionize the percutaneous minimalinvasive stone therapye . From this access profit the young patient.

ROBOTIC SURGERY:

Laparoscopic surgery is offered to many paediatric urology problems (undescended testis, varicocele, nephrectomy for multi cystic dysplastic kidneys or non functioning kidney in ectopic ureter; pyeloplasty for PUJ obstruction).

ESWL:

Stones in children can be broken without surgery with the help of ESWL. No touch therapy due ultrasound waves.

URODYNAMICS:

This special test provides information about a bladder that is not functioning well. Neurogenic bladder or hyperactive bladder could be diagnosed by an urodynamic exam
